What is
Maxillo-facial Surgey / TM Joint Problems

Maxillo-facial Surgey / TM Joint Problems affect the jaw joint and muscles that control the jaw. They can be challenging to diagnose and treat because of how complex this joint is.

There are many possible causes of Maxillo-facial Surgey / TM Joint Problems. Some known causes include physical injury, arthritis, grinding or clenching the teeth during sleep, auto-immune diseases etc.

Some cases of TMJ disorders will resolve themselves within a short period, usually within a couple of months. This analysis is to be done by a dental surgeon.

Other causes may be genetic, hormonal, or environmental. For instance, violinists have been noted to experience TMJ disorders at a higher rate than the general population, since their work involves holding an instrument under the jaw. This can cause strain, which leads to TMJ disorders.

Treatments in
Maxillo-facial Surgey / TM Joint Problems

1. Night Guard / Splint

Night Guard, also known as mouth guard / bite guard / teeth protector are tooth-coverings to ease night clenching and grinding – known as Bruxism. Bruxism causes TMJ Problems like pain in TMJ. Easing the associated clenching and grinding with teeth protectors helps protect against tooth damage and gum recession.
It also promotes better sleep and better dental health overall, along with less jaw pain.

2. Arthrocentesis

Arthrocentesis is a wash out of a joint space. Usually carried out while patient is asleep under a general anaesthetic.

Washing out is thought to clean and remove any loose material in the joint. These could be the result of a degenerative process. During the procedure, the mouth will be opened and closed a few times to allow thorough wash out.

In some cases, a camera can be used to facilitate the process, this is called Arthroscopy.

Facial Trauma

Maxillofacial trauma refers to any injury to the face or jaw caused by physical forces. It also includes injuries to any of the bony or fleshy structures of the face.
