Teeth Alignments
Explained

In simple terms, we can define dental aesthetics as a procedure to enhance the overall appearance of the teeth. The primary purpose of dental aesthetics is to keep the teeth aligned, improve their structure, and beautify their color and shape so that you can smile confidently.

Dental aesthetics is both a preventive and a restorative measure as it can be utilized to correct missing teeth and other similar problems.

But it is noteworthy to highlight that aesthetic dentistry is not the same as cosmetic dentistry.

Aesthetic dentistry is any method used for enhancing smile through treatments that would be necessary. On the contrary, cosmetic dentistry involves correcting existing or old dental works such as veneers, crowns, bridges etc which may not be particularly pleasant to the eyes.

Type Of
Alignments

1. Braces

Braces are the most efficient and accurate way of moving (re-shaping) teeth. Braces (bands, brackets and wires) are usually made of stainless steel although clear brackets are available. Treatment usually takes 18 – 24 months. Some cases may be finished earlier and others may take longer to complete.

2. Aligners: Aligners are devices used to reposition and straighten teeth, with minimal impact on your everyday life. That is why this device is designed to be removable, and is almost invisible during use.

Aligners can be beneficial in many circumstances, with typical treatable cases like:

  • To straighten teeth which are crooked, overcrowded or gapped.
  • To treat bite issues such as overbites, underbites or crossbites.
  • To re-correct teeth which have moved after having braces.

3. Orthognathic Surgery

Jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, corrects irregularities of the jaw bones and realigns the jaws and teeth to improve the way they work. Making these corrections may also improve your facial appearance.

Jaw surgery may be a corrective option if you have jaw problems that cannot be resolved with orthodontics alone.Jaw surgery is appropriate after growth stops, usually around ages 14 to 16 years for females and ages 17 to 21 years for males.

Jaw surgery may help to:

  • Correct facial imbalance such as small chins, underbites, overbites and crossbites
  • Improve ability of the lips to fully close comfortably
  • Relieve pain caused by TMJ disorder and other jaw problems
  • Provide relief for obstructive sleep apnoea
